This page will stand as a display and repository for my different works. While I am constantly trying out new working methods, I get most excited about visualizations that involve exploration of thematic data in space and time, using programmatic tools - ActionScript in Flex, predominantly. I have been in an interface designer role for some time now, as a result of early success on that front. While that work keeps me busy, I am also seeking to branch out, explore, and show my strengths and interests in actual visualization design, where I can get my hands dirty with data, manipulating and coaxing symbols and representations to create new ways to look at data. --Updated 2011.11.03--

SkuaTools

2011 - now -- Independent

Heeding the advice of a wise man, I collected some of my various Flex 4 and ActionScript code, created a library project and am sharing it on Google Code under the moniker of SkuaTools. It's a humble beginning, with a rudimentary box plot, some classes for mapping MapBox and TileMill tiles in Google Maps Flash API, and a before and after image viewer.

Brown Marmorated Stinkbug Tracking Portal

2011 -- Center for Environmental Informatics (CEI) at Penn State

With others at CEI, I developed the map interfaces for entering sightings of Brown Marmorated Stinkbugs, an invasive agricultural pest, and for viewing submitted observations. I also helped architect and execute the server-side structure.

National Phenology Network (NPN) Phenology Visualization Tool

2011 -- Center for Environmental Informatics (CEI) at Penn State

With others at CEI, I helped develop this Flash tool in Flex 4, closely following the client's demands. The complexity and richness of NPN's data presented many challenges in visualizing in both map and graph forms, with potential remaining to design a form that best represents the underlying phenonmena.

Water Quality Monitoring Data Web-Map

2010 -- Independent

A web-map portal put together for exploring water quality data offshore of Ajax, Ontario, this project provided an enjoyable experience in quickly hacking a way to lay bathymetry contours onto Google Maps using a NOAA web-service and creating custom symbols and symbol classing for a range of water quality data.

Abu Dhabi Coastal Atlas

2009-2010 -- Applied Science Associates, Inc.

As the lead developer of my first project at ASA, I had the opportunity to really dig into Adobe Flex in ways I had not before. While I'm proud of the Atlas, my experience traveling to the UAE, and what I learned in the process, it was in the end, mostly an exercise in user interface design, not data-driven visualization, which is what I am working to move towards.

HerbariaViz

2008-2010 -- GeoVISTA Center at Penn State

A web-based geovisual analytic tool began as my very first programming project in Flash CS3 at the beginning of my master's program. The application has come a long way, with a major update to Flex and a recently accepted publication in Ecological Informatics about its information structure, interface design, symbology, and user evaluation.

Master's Thesis: Explicitly Representing Geographic Change in Animated Maps with Bivariate Symbology

2007-2009 -- Penn State Department of Geography

A thorough explanation would take more words than can fit here. Please feel free to read the abstract here and download a copy if so inclined.
