NTSE has a long History. The Scheme was introduced as National Science Talent Search Scheme in 
the year 1963. The NTSE program was mounted to spot and nurture the skills of scholarsand grant them with the scholarships. Within the first year it was restricted to Union Territory of Delhi and solely ten scholarships were awarded to category XI students.In the next year i.e. 1964 the NTSE examination was extended to all or any states and Union Territories in India and also the scholarships were increased to 350 for the scholars of sophistication XI. The results of NTSE was supported written examination, a project report and interview. The written examination comprised the Science Aptitude Test and an Essay on a given scientific theme. In the year 2007 the NTSE exam was held for class 8thwhich consisted of 90 questions from MAT and SAT, each. The amount of scholarship was raised to Rs. 500 per month for the students studying in class 9th onwards. A great initiative was seen in 2008 where a provision of 3% reservation was made for the physically challenged students. Now, the NTSE exam is only for 10th class students. There are around 1000 scholarships. The awardees will get a scholarship of Rs.1250 per month from 11th to 12th class and for undergraduates and postgraduates the scholarship will amount to Rs. 2000. UGC fixes the norms for amount of scholarship for Ph.D. candidates.
